For much of its history, North Carolina has been a land of compact landowners, its population scattered across a huge landscape.

Inside mountains, for example, farmers built their houses on wind-sheltered slopes facing south, next to a spring or a creek. They planted pole beans and morning glories to help shade their porches within summer. Their houses were increased on stone piers to help level the slope and to allow hillside water to help drain underneath. The crops and the animals they raised varied from mountain valley to river bottom, according to how steep the land was and that this sun came over the mountain ridge.
